Smithfield Data Center — To Approve or Not to Approve, The Details

Posted on October 10, 2026October 15, 2026

Introduction

As a candidate, I have met and conversed with so many people since late-July. First, thank you to all the people that respected and supportive of my decision to run for Town Council.

Many questions were asked by residents. Three questions rise to the top of the list.

  • Development: Residents are concerned about the number of development projects being discussed and considered in Town.  They are concerned that Smithfield will lose its “feel” as a suburban/rural town.  Becoming like two towns adjacent to us.
  • Fiscal Matters, Senior Tax Freeze: Spending more money than our revenue for several fiscal years through 2025.  Borrowing funds for purchases and construction.  And yes, the senior tax freeze (more about that in a future post).
  • Data Center: Many many questions about this initiative.

So it will be Door #3 for this post.

The Data Center Deep Dive

Over the last month, I have compiled a tremendous amount of research on the subject of data centers. It is a phenomenon that is not only sweeping the nation, but it is also the subject of deep and serious questions.

This subject is extremely complicated with accounting, taxation and other business rules. Therefore, I have provided two PDF documents: Full Report (18 pages), Summary Report (8 pages).
